Interns at Old Age Homes

Share with

Among many old age homes in Nepal, and a few of them in Kathmandu, our interns chose to go to the one near The Pashupatinath Temple. There we found elderly people of ages 60 and above living the remaining days of their lives.  Those people are there for mostly two reasons, either they’re isolated from the family because they turned old, or because they’ve no relatives to live with. For those who need a bit of support, care and love, old age homes are good places to live in.

After some observations, our interns figured out that most of the elderly people there have some sort of illness, or disabilities. One cannot understand most of the times what most of them say, but still, help needs no language. They had complaints about their sons and families who discarded them from their homes, yet they’re pretty pleased with what God has handed to them and have found one common and the most cordial way of living, and that is, with “Harmony”. Our interns interviewed some helpers that we found in the old age home, about the lifestyle and daily routine of elderly people living there and found out that it was poor and always the same. Satisfied with what they observed, collected and got to experience, interns have promised to visit the old age home again and more frequently.

Thus, there were a few pleasing moments (dancing, singing and sharing experiences) and some lessons to be learned. It’s not how old you are, it’s how you are old. Our lives can’t be measured by our final years. Despite the unsatisfactory provision of facilities, old age homes have done magnificent jobs for the care of old people.
